“Have We Forgotten How to Leave the 99?”

Jesus told a story:
A shepherd, noticing one sheep missing, leaves the ninety-nine to go and find it. (Luke 15:4–7)
No plan. No backup. Just the urgency of love.

But I wonder…
Have we forgotten how to leave the 99?

Today, we measure success by numbers, programs, polished services, and busy calendars.
We’ve built systems to manage the 99 — but sometimes at the cost of forgetting the one who’s in pain…
…in doubt
…in silence
…in hiding.

And here’s the truth:
Going after the one doesn’t require a strategy.
It doesn’t take lights, microphones, or funding.
It takes compassion.
It takes courage.
A willingness to leave comfort and move toward pain — even when you don’t have the words, the budget, or a clear outcome.

Some of the most powerful ministry happens without a stage.
It happens in a text message.
A coffee shop.
A quiet presence in a hospital room.
A simple “I haven’t seen you in a while — are you okay?”

Because people in pain don’t need perfection — they need presence.
And love is willing to show up empty-handed if that’s what it takes.

Jesus left the 99 for the one.
Are we willing to do the same — even when it’s inconvenient, uncomfortable, or under-resourced?

Because the lost don’t need programs — they need people.
And people, led by love, will always be enough.
